Weeks of torrential rains trigger landslides in Nishihara Town

Date Posted: 2010-08-05

Officially, Okinawa’s rainy season is ended, but you’d have trouble convincing Nishihara Town residents who’ve seen buildings ready to collapse and a parking lot disintegrate beneath the weight of landslides.

The heavy rains that have repeatedly swept across the island since late May have given Nishihara Town’s Ikeda area cause for concerns as a mentally retarded rehabilitation center had its fence and parking lot collapse. Officials at Airakuen said the land began shifting in late May, collapsing the parking lot fence. Attempts to repair it were insufficient to hold back the landslides, which ultimately wiped out the parking lot.

Making matters worse, the rehabilitation center itself sits on a hillside 30 meters above the parking lot level, and now there’s fear the building could shift and collapse. The center is home to 50 patients. The facility is asking Nishihara Town to make improvements in the community hall, and around the facility’s road drainage ditches.
