Inter-scholastic athletic competition under way

Eighteen Okinawa cities, towns and villages are playing host to the Japan-wide Inter-Scholastic Athletic Competition that runs for 22 days with participants in more than two dozen sports.

Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito was on hand for opening ceremonies yesterday, and spent the afternoon visiting several of the sports venues where more than 20,000 athletes and spectators from mainland Japan have gathered. The 50-year-old heir to the throne occupied by his father, Emperor Akihito, arrived in Okinawa Tuesday and departs today. His visit has caused some traffic snarls due to security surrounding him. Some 20,000 police were brought from mainland Japan to provide security.

Traffic restrictions are in place today from 7:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. during the nationwide bicycle competition. Highway 58 from the Nago Fire Station to Isagawa Intersection by Kunigami Village, is the most heavily restricted roadway.

The festival schedule has events taking place across the island.

In Okinawa City, track and field events run July 30th to August 1st, High School boys basketball runs today through August 3rd, Water polo is scheduled August 17th-20th, and soft tennis for boys August 6th and 7th and August 20th and 11th for girls. Gymnastics take place August 3rd and rhythmic gymnastics August 8th.

Nago City hosts girls volleyball August 6th – 8th, Judo August 9th, Japanese archery today and tomorrow, tennis tomorrow through August 5th, swimming August 17th – 20th, and Naginata on August 4th. In Chatan Town and Kadena Town, girls softball is being played July 31st – August 2nd. Yomitan Village and Onna Village host boys softball August 7th – 9th. Uruma City hosts sumo August 3rd and soccer August 1st – 6th.

Archery takes place August 2nd and 3rd in Ginowan City, while table tennis competition is August 8th – 11th. Urasoe City hosts handball August 1st – 5th and karate August 9th and 10th. Fencing takes place today through Saturday in Kin Town, while basketball plays out today through August 2nd in Nakagusuku Village. Kendo competition is August 3rd and 4th in Nago City, while Kunigami Village and Yonabaru Town host yacht races August 7th – 9th. Bicycling on the oval track is August 7th – 9th in Kitanakagusuku Village, while canoeing is in Ginoza Village August 4th – 6th. Nakijin Village hosts hockey July 30th - August 2nd, while Itoman City is the venue for badminton today through August 1st.
