Seaport Chatan Festival set for Sunset Beach

Date Posted: 2010-07-15

Not one, but two nights of fireworks are part of the weekend Seaport Chatan Festival slated for Sunset Beach.

The festival gets underway Saturday with an Indies music contest by local artists, moves to the opening ceremonies, and then to the real fun. Traditional Okinawa events include the dragon boat races, called Haarii, as well as a tug-of-war, raft races, sports competitions and Eisa performances. The big races take place on Sunday with 11-man teams competing in the colorful dragon boats.

Itís all happening on Sunset Beach, not far from Kadena Air Base. The highlight of the entire festival, say attendees of past festivals, is the two consecutive nights of spectacular fireworks. The Seaport Chatan Carnival is loaded with typical Japanese festival street food including corn dogs, octopus balls, yakisoba and yakitori, potatoes and corn on the cob.

For those looking for something a little different, a drive down Highway 58 to Naha, and then onto Route 331 to Itoman City, will bring you to the Itoman Hometown Festival. It takes place at the local roadside market, and includes games, food and fireworks on Saturday and Sunday.
