Prefecture Police ready to charge U.S. sailor

Date Posted: 2010-07-15

A U.S. Navy sailor who has already admitted to Okinawa Prefecture Police she was drunk when she rear-ended an Okinawan’s car in northern Okinawa in March will soon see her case before the Naha District Prosecutor.

The Seabee assigned to a stateside mobile construction battalion deployed to Okinawa injured the vehicle driver and two children in the car that had just pulled out from a convenience store and headed down the highway. Police say the woman fled the scene after the accident, and was found shortly later a few kilometers from the scene. Okinawa Prefecture Police say the woman was so drunk she couldn’t even talk when apprehended.

Police have worked with U.S. military police, including inspecting the Navy vehicle the woman was driving. The vehicle is now impounded at Camp Kinser. Police say they’ve just about wrapped up their investigation, which includes documents on the sailor’s blood alcohol levels and her confession, and will send it to the Public Prosecutor’s Office very soon.
