Okinawa ready to host interscholastic athletes

Date Posted: 2010-07-15

Organizers say everything’s ready for the influx of 35,000 people coming to Okinawa to participate in, or watch, the Churaumi-Okinawa Interscholastic Athletic Meet that kicks off July 28th.

The venues are ready, organizing committees have worked through the myriad of details in having hotels and home stays locked in, transportation arranged, and school athletic fields in tiptop shape for the competition coming to Okinawa for the first time. Organizers say they’ve everything under control except for one thing; they’ve got their fingers crossed a typhoon will not plot a path across Okinawa during the weeklong competition.

Athletes and their families, as well as school coaches and other officials, were required to make their own travel arrangements from the mainland to Okinawa, with local committees then coordinating hotels and local transportation. The logistics coordination has been intense, because organizers had to factor in how long athletes and others would remain on the island, since nobody knows which ones will win and need to stay longer, while others losing their events would want to return home more quickly than planned.
