No live Nagoya Sumo broadcast on NHK

Date Posted: 2010-07-08

Saying the gambling scandal being dealt to Japan’s sumo is “a very serious problem that shakes the foundation” of the national sport, the Japan Broadcasting Company has announced its coverage of th Nagoya Sumo Tournament has been cancelled.

Public backlash against the gambling allegations that have already led the Nihon Sumo Kyokai, the Japan sumo association to dismiss ozeki champion Kotomitsuki and stablemaster Otake for their illegal betting on baseball, has forced NHK to opt out of coverage of the upcoming tournament. It’s the first time NHK will skip live coverage of a grand sumo tournament ever. NHK President Shigeo Fukuchi called the gambling scandal, which is believed to have been arranged by gangsters, “regrettable”. Instead of live coverage, NHK will broadcast a daily tournament digest after 6 p.m. each day of the 15-day competition that starts Sunday.

Many sumo fans have told HNK that the live broadcast of the Nagoya tournament should be canceled, Fukuchi said, adding that while noting that many people were looking forward to enjoying the tournament on TV or on the radio, the sumo association has yet to make clear how it intends to reform itself.
