Swimmer drowns during rough water swim meet

Date Posted: 2010-06-24

A mainland Japanese swimmer participating in the Zamami Island rough water swim competition drowned during the weekend meet.

Identified only as Mr. Taniguchi, officials say the competitor from Kyoto began showing strange swim patterns and he was lifted into a boat and cardiac massage given. The man died before he could be transported to a Naha City hospital. An autopsy is being considered.

Tetsu Miyazato, the Zamami Village mayor and host of the event, canceled the following day’s sea kayak race. “I feel very sorry about the accident and the dead racer,” he said, “and now we have to examine sports events as to what went wrong and why it happened, and what the sports event means for all of us.”
