Peaceful Love Fest to rock Okinawa

Summer is in the air, and the upcoming holiday weekend that celebrates America’s independence will be filled with the rock and roll music of nearly two dozen artists and groups.

Organizers of the Peaceful Love Rock Festival 2010 say it’s a perfect time for a rock festival, only two weeks after the rainy season ended and everyone’s got island fever.

The Peaceful Love Rock Festival is set to rock the Okinawa City Athletic Field Saturday and Sunday, July 3rd and 4th, with musical sounds echoing from 23 different bands,

Gates open at 1 p.m. both Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 4th at the athletic field, near Kadena Air Base Gate 5, and the music kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Saturday’s lineup includes HY, Kariyushi 58, Diamantes, D-51, All Japan Goith, Zukan, Stereopony, Yanawaraba, Fuzzy Quartet Row, Mana Musica, Airbag and Audition Band.

On Sunday, new faces join the veterans as Murasaki, Freddie Eto & Queeness, Katchan & Jack Nasty’s Band, Jet, Makin’ Love, Porky’s, Kaguyahimo, Bourbonz, 2side 1 Brain, Art More Groovy and Audition Band perform. Bands will be coming from mainland Japan, and tour agencies are even booking special flights to bring visitors to Okinawa for the festival.

Sunday’s performance includes the Murasaki Project, which began the whole festival concept in 1983. It was ‘Murasaki Why Now?’ that first year, and the event was so successful it’s hard for organizers to hold back the numbers of bands who now want to perform on Okinawa.

Billed as the greatest music event on Okinawa, Peaceful Love Rock Festival places emphasis on bringing music to the world’s less fortunate children, promoting the love of music and people working together. It also reaches out to the world with its diverse array of entertainers, and takes it a step further with concert organizers’ working together with tourism organizations to attract visitors to Okinawa. An aside to the concert, but one Peaceful Love Rock Festival leaders say is important is promotion of new musical creations and improving music culture on the island.

A one-day ticket is ¥3,800 in advance or ¥4,300 at the gate, while a two-day ticket, sold only in advance, is ¥6,000. Ticket information is available from the Peaceful Love Rock Festival Committee, (098) 930-1184. A limited number of discounted tickets for the second day of the festival are available at Print-21 and Mail Center concessions on Camp Foster and Kadena.
