Abundant sunshine, heat, replace the rainy season

Date Posted: 2010-06-23

Four days earlier than predicted, and 18 days earlier than one year ago, Okinawa’s rainy season was declared over last Saturday by the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory.

Earlier projections had eyed June 23rd as the final day of the annual spring rainy season, but Mother Nature did it her way, shutting down the wet stuff earlier, replacing it with sunshine, heat, and humidity.

Naha City scored 213% of normal precipitation during this year’s rainy season May 6th through June 18th, a total of 761.5ml. Nago City recorded 171% of normal, recording 610.5ml compared with a normal year’s 357.8ml. The best news coming from Okinawa Meteorological Observatory and Prefecture officials is that Okinawa’s dams are now 100% filled with water.

With the summer season moving into full swing, Itoman City’s Nishizaki Park, also called Oyamizu Park, is a magnet for youngsters. Officials warn, though, that the risk of sunburn is high during this summer season, and encourage the use of sun screens, as well as wearing capts or hats to protect the body.
