Alo Hai Festival accents Okinawa-Hawaii relationsDate Posted: 2010-06-17 ![]() The Alo Hai Festival, a collaboration between Honolulu, Hawaii and Okinawa, takes place this Saturday at Naha City Civic Hall in Yorimiya. Okinawa’s commemorates its 25th anniversary of an official friendship declaration with the State of Hawaii, and doubles that to celebrate 50 years of sister city relations between Naha and Honolulu. Former sumo wrestler Konishiki, who’s now turned entertainer-singer, headlines the entertainment at the event, joined by the top singer in Hawaii, Amy Hanaiali’i. The third performer is Ariana Tseu who was Miss Hawaii USA 2009. The entertainment was put together by Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, who has promised to hop up on stage during the shows to perform himself. Doors open at the Civic Hall at 3 p.m. with the show starting at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at Okinawa Market at Chuo Park Avenue in Okinawa City. Amy Hanaiali’i and the hula team collaboration takes the first hour of the three-hour event. Tiare Heipua and Halau Moani Ke’ala, both of Okinawa, are part of the nine-group presentation. Others are Hula & Tahitian Halau Tiare Heipua from Fukui Prefecture, Hui Nohona Aloha, Hula Halau Pikake, Hau’oli Piko Ka Aina Hula Studio, Yuri Taka Islanders, Hula Halau O pua’ena, and Kaulu Wehi O Ke Kai. Traditional Tamaki-style Ryukyu Dance and Ryukyu Folk Songs Live by Keiko Higa comes next, followed by the Ariana Tseu Hula Show, Amy Hanaiali’I, and Konishiki. The grand finale is a 15-minute eisa, kachashi and Hawaii Aloha performance. |
