Survey: Okinawans feel good about themselves

Date Posted: 2010-06-17

Okinawa Prefecture has released a new report that shows Okinawa citizens perceive themselves as happy, and feeling good about the island’s warm humanity.

Survey participants described how they view the cohesive nature of Okinawans, the mild climate and Okinawa’s special culture as reasons they feel good about themselves. They also cited the island’s strong interdependence which leads Okinawans to help each other, the rich natural landscape and environment of Okinawa, and the relaxed nature of life here.

Respondents also noted the simple kindness Okinawans share with each other, the island’s age longevity and open mindedness, and the acceptance of foreigners.

At the same time, the survey found Okinawans worry about they’re being “too soft” and lacking strictness, having a narrow field of vision and reliance only upon close friends and family. They also admitted Okinawans give up to easily or too quickly, depending only on a small circle of friends and families.

The frequent typhoons striking Okinawa are a worry, as is lack of cooperation among different groups of people, including a “too exclusive” attitude. Asked about a sense of values, about 79% of those surveyed said they believe it better to be psychologically rich rather than materially wealthy.
