Jazz artist Ray McMorrin to perform at Cotonoha

Raymond McMorrin and his tenor saxophone will belt out the jazz in concert Sunday at Cotonoha.

A Connecticut native who began playing the sax in junior high school, McMorrin has worked his way through a musical education that included stops at the Universiy of the Arts in Philadelphia and the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music. After sessions with jazz musicians and groups in the U.S., McMorrin made the transition to Japan in 2005, where he’s now a regular on the Tokyo jazz scene.

He credits Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Joe Henderson with influencing his style.-, which is described by ,music critics as a very unique yet modern and progressive sound. He’s performed with many renowned musicians such as pianists Horace Silver and Hank Jones, recording “My Fanvorite Things” on CD with Tiffany in 2006.

In the Sunday session at Cotonoha, McMorrin will perform with guitarist Kosuke Joma and bassist Ganji and Dylan Savage at drums. Trumpetist Frank Gordon is the special guest. The concert starts at 8 p.m. with doors opening an hour earlier.

Tickets cost ¥2,000 in advance, and ¥500 more at door. Drinks or food are not included. Tickets for the McMorrin concert at Cotonoha are available at Print 21 Concession at Camp Foster, and at the Mail Center in the Kadena BX.

Cotonoha is located on Hwy 330 in Akamichi, Ginowan City.
