Cell phone sales plummet as consumers watch money

Date Posted: 2010-06-11

Cellular telephone sales dropped sharply in 2009, with sales recorded by the top 10 distributors crashing nearly 10%.

A new report from Teikoku Data Bank Okinawa says sales are down ¥24.417 billion for 2009, with the top ten distributors suffering a nearly 16% drop. Collectively, the 34 cellular phone distributors in Okinawa reported a sales decline of 9.7%.

The top cellular phone sales company was Ryukyu Oil Company, which sold ¥4.017 billion, down 11.8% from 2008. Second place Kouki Company watched sales fall 5.1% to ¥2.641 billion, and E. Cord Company, the prefecture’s third largest distributor, reporting a 15.4% drop in sales to ¥2.478 billion.

Cellular phone distributors say the world’s economy is largely to blame, causing many consumers to stick with their old phones instead of upgrading to newer models. They say new customer cellular phone purchases also dropped sharply.
