Quest for the big one; Sam's Cup 2010By: By Bill Charles Date Posted: 2010-06-11 ![]() ![]() ![]() The 36-hour event is a non-profit friendship tournament, the organizers say, encouraging fishermen to B.Y.O.B. [Bring Your Own Boat] or engage services of a charter service to head out in search of the big ones. Fishermen start from the harbor at 6 a.m. Saturday, and have until 6 p.m. Sunday to bring their catches to the judges’ weigh-in stand at Ginowan. Spectators are welcome. Officials say all fish must be a minimum of 10 kilograms to be considered for prizes. If a fish is on the line two hours before the 6 p.m. deadline, a two-hour extension will be granted if the fisherman’s crew calls tournament officials to report the catch. Entry to the event, which cost ¥10,000, officially closed June 1st. A Captain’s meeting will be held at Sam’s by the Sea patio at Okinawa Marina on Friday at 6:30 p.m. An awards ceremony will be held at Sam’s by the Sea patio on Monday at 7 p.m. Non-fishermen may attend as guests at a cost of ¥3,000 each. Organizers say they want the tournament to be a fun time, but warn “all fish stories welcomed, but complaints will not be tolerated.” Rain showers are a possibility Sunday morning, but otherwise, weather is favorable with light swells just over one meters. Winds are forecast at 5~20kph, with 25C temperatures. |
