Wet and wild!

Date Posted: 2010-06-11

Dragon Boat Races, known on Okinawa as “Haarii,” date back more than 20 centuries in China, and spread from there throughout south-east Asia, as a ritual to ensure safety and good catch for fishermen.

The traditional day of the races in local fishing communities is May 4 of the lunar calendar that falls this year on next Tuesday, June 15th. On that day races are held at fishing ports of practically every village in Okinawa main and outer islands.

The best known events are held in fishing ports in Itoman, Oshima in Nanjo, Minatogawa in Yaese and Maegane in Onna. All outer islands have similar events on the same day.
