Farm Ministry denies Ishigaki cow has foot-and-mouth disease

Date Posted: 2010-06-11

Livestock farmers nationwide have been appealing to the Farm Ministry to have a Tokyo institute independently test cattle for foot-and-mouth disease in the aftermath of an outbreak that has wreaked havoc on the Miyazaki Prefecture meat industry.

A senior Ministry official confirms that while the young cow had some classic foot-and-mouth disease symptoms, the cow did not have the disease. Okinawa officials say the cow’s salivation and fever sent up alarms that led to testing.
