Money’s tight, but Naha City Assembly to vote itself more

Date Posted: 2010-06-11

Naha City Assembly members are preparing to vote themselves a ¥20,000 increase in compensation for policy study and research at its June business meeting.

The Assembly members have been receiving a ¥70,000 Policy Research Cost allowance, but having seen their allowances for travel and other expenses slashed, they’ve found a roundabout way to vote themselves more. Assembly members are paid monthly, and receive travel fees and some per diem too. Citizens are complaining the proposed additional allowance amounts to double payment and say it shouldn’t be approved. As the business meeting approaches, polling shows almost every Assembly member in agreement the increase is warranted.

Travel fees are paid permitting Assembly members to attend meetings outside Naha City, but the amount has been cut because of the economy. The ¥20,000 increase to ¥90,000 is viewed by citizens as excessive, and are demanding explanations from Assembly members.
