New hot springs hotel set for Senega Island

Date Posted: 2010-06-03

Ground breaking for a new hot springs hotel facility is set for July on Senega Island near Naha International Airport.

The site, partly owned by Tomigusuku City, will be developed into a hotel complex to be completed and open next summer. The facility will be operated by Yasuo Kondo and his company, GIO Okinawa. Kondo spent last week explaining to city officials and residents how the project will be developed.

It was originally supposed to have been started in 2008 and completed last year, but problems with Naha International Airport second runway location design slowed the project. Kondo says everything has now been approved, paving the way for next month’s construction start. Excavation and construction will be accomplished by GIO Okinawa, but rights to the hot spring will remain with Tomigusuku City. The developer, GIO Okinawa, and Tomigusuku City are making a contract for a 30-year hot springs rental.

The hot springs have already been inspected for water quality, receiving high marks from inspectors. The new hotel will have hot springs baths and a sauna set in open areas. The hotel is slated to have 108 rooms, and will employ more than 100 local Okinawan workers.
