Drunken GI’s attack two taxis in Okinawa City

Date Posted: 2010-06-03

Police and Okinawa City residents are angry and frustrated over American servicemen attacking taxi drivers, with two new incidents reported over the weekend.

A soldier assigned to Torii Station, Jose Garcia, attacked a taxi driver in Okinawa City after becoming drunk and getting into the taxi, only to discover his friends weren’t with him and he was alone. “Why did you let me ride alone?” he demanded of the driver. The 22-year-old said “You shouldn’t take me alone,” and then attacked the driver, choking him with his hands.

Less than 24 hours later, a 22-year-old Kadena Air Base airman threw his sneaker at a taxi at a stand near Park Avenue in Okinawa City. The taxi driver called police to report the incident, telling cops Brandon Keith had hurled his shoe at the taxi. Police found Keith still standing at the incident spot. They arrested the drunken airman after finding a sneaker lying on the street next to the taxicab.
