Mini Mini Zoo offers egg-citing experience

The animals are exotic and the Mini-Mini Zoo is unique, to say the least, but what makes this a very special adventure is that it’s a zoo that is also an eggs and pastries place.

The Zukeran Chicken Farm – Mini Mini Zoo is in Akamichi, Uruma City (the old Gushikawa City), combining the tasty goodness of fresh eggs with an eclectic zoo that has a fair collection of animals including a llama, an ostrich, a variety of monkeys, birds, bats, turtles, ducks and more. The Mini Mini Zoo is just right for small kids, who are guaranteed to get excited at the tropical birds, as well as animals that can be petted.

There are several elements of the Zukeran Chicken Farm – Mini Mini Zoo that could be called something really special and different, but first, note that the Mini Mini Zoo is free of charge. The zoo features five varieties of turtles, ten different snakes, seven breeds of rabbits, a couple types of owls, as well as peafowl, pigeons, chickens, an armadillo, a wallaby and colorful tropical birds.

Owned and operated by Zukeran Chicken Farm, there’s another round of treats in store for visitors. The fresh eggs are sooooo fresh, people travel from miles around to get their fix of eggs with a gorgeous yolk color. One visitor says “when you break them they aren’t at all runny, and the egg white is thicker and just has a better texture.”

Skipping past the eggs and wandering to the small bakery on the other side of the showroom, one finds chiffon cakes and “the largest cream puffs I’ve seen on the island,” according to one woman. There are sponge cakes, roll cakes, cupcakes and chou a la crème. Although not homemade, the store sells ice creams and sherbets.

To reach the Zukeran Chicken Farm – Mini Mini Zoo, exit Kadena Air Base Gate 3, turn right and then left at Ikento Intersection under the Okinawa Expressway, and continue across Route 329. Look for two large Pachinko parlors. One’s yellow and white, and the other’s orange. The Zukeran Chicken Farm – Mini Mini Zoo is located between the two pachinko parlors on a narrow road. There is a sign, indicating a left turn is needed to enter the parking lot.
