Awamori-Coffee blend tasty treat

Date Posted: 2010-05-21

An Okinawa City company has created a novelty drink that’s gaining popularity among Okinawans young and old: a coffee drink that mixes together awamori and coffee.

Shinzato Shuzo Company, which dates back to 1846, has stirred up the tasty mixture of awamori and coffee beans, and is now selling off the shelves at supermarkets and liquor stores across the prefecture. Shinzato officials tout the health benefits of the drink, which not only is delicious, but has diet effects, as well. The caffeine disburses and burns fat, prevents or lessens hangovers often connected to alcohols, and contains no sugar.

The ‘Coffee Spirits’, as it’s labeled on the bottles, which sell for ¥1,180 per 720ml bottle, combines Shinzato’s best awamori with select coffee beans roasted to the company’s specifications that leaves the coffee with a special taste and tartness. Shinzato’s distillery specialists say the drink can be enjoyed by anyone wanting a flavorful coffee filled with tenderness.

They recommend the Coffee Spirits be mixed with water or hot milk at a three parts Coffee Spirits with seven parts water or milk. For those craving a touch of sweetness, a drop of syrup can be added.
