Okinawa’s rainy season starts 10 days early

Date Posted: 2010-05-21

Okinawa’s annual rainy season is in full swing, getting its start last weekend with a violent series of thunderstorms that deluged the island.

By Sunday at 9:20 p.m., cities across the island were recording the highest amounts of precipitation since 1976. Uruma City reported 294.5mm over a 24-hour period, while Okinawa City recorded 282mm. In Yomitan Village, 189mm fell, and Nanjou City registered 176.5mm. Okinawa City and Uruma City’s rainfall was the highest in decades.

The heavy rainfall triggered landslides in a number of locations. In Naha City’s Shikina area, a landslide pushed a wall to collapse sending dirt, sand and soil to a resident’s home. A total of 15 people in three families were evacuated. In Ishikawa, Uruma City’s Route 329 had landslides that blocked the road and forced detours.

The Okinawa Expressway between Naha Interchange and Ishikawa Interchange was closed. Landslides in the Ikeda area of Nishihara Town blocked access roads, blocking entry to the expressway.
