Resort construction running afoul of Taketomi Town’s residents

Date Posted: 2010-05-21

Taketomi Town on Taketomi Island is often referred to as “the last paradise on earth”, and residents are now demanding action by its local government to block construction of a resort they say doesn’t meet the community’s stringent landscape and building code regulations.

A company from Nagano Prefecture on the mainland and the local Nansei Tourist Company are planning to build a 50-cottage resort, but residents are up in arms demanding the Association of Taketomi Town Charter Revival take action to block the planned construction. Association representative Tsuyoshi Uema has asked the Taketomi Town mayor to investigate and fix the problem.

The two companies insist they have the proper special exception permits to build any type facility in the chosen zone, and say they are committed to protecting the environment. Yasuyo Kamisedo, owner of Nansei Tourist Co., says “we did get approval from Taketomi Town in March of last year, so there’s nothing we do that’s against regulation. No problem at all.”
