Birds getting special attention this week

Date Posted: 2010-05-14

It’s the Week for Loving Birds, and local organizations are using the special week to promote both education about birds and stressing the need for protecting the natural environment.

The special commemoration week began Monday and runs through Sunday, with local environmentalists emphasizing the need to learn about and understand Okinawa’s wild birds. It’s focusing on the Yanbarukuina, which is currently in its breeding and child rearing season in northern Okinawa’s Motobu area. The naturalists are calling for more care by drivers, as the Yanbarukuina are on the streets with their young broods, searching for food.

Ten Yanbarukuina have already been killed this year by vehicles, and officials are emphasizing the need for attention to the baby birds, which hide under the mother’s leg. They say the Yanbarukuina could become extinct if humans don’t take more care to protect them.
