Martial Arts Academy still teaching hard kicking

Date Posted: 2010-05-06

Like a scene out of one of your favorite martial arts movies, when you walk into Capoeira Academy Okinawa you are walking into the mysterious world that surrounds fascination with the martial arts!

Students are punching, flipping, kicking and sweating hard, but always with a mindset and focus that the fun they are having in class is what brings them success in a real life situation or even a caged competition. Capoeira Academy Okinawa, under owner and head instructor Benjamin Moriniere has offered quality martial arts programs for Okinawans, SOFA status and foreign nationals alike, on Okinawa since 2004, with the first dojo opened in Mihama in 2007.

Now, fast forward to 2010 to find Capoeira Academy Okinawa with a bigger and better school located right on Araha Beach in Hamby Town, Chatan. According to Moriniere, “We were located in a great location right on 58 but we were blessed to outgrow that location and we opened our new studio in Hamby Town right on the beach!”

Students can train in several martial arts. The first program is Capoeira, the Brazilian martial arts started over 500 years ago by African slaves in Brazil who disguised their martial art as a dance. It is characterized by fluid, powerful attacks, defense and mesmerizing acrobatics. The school also offers adult and youth Yudansha Mixed Martial Arts, a world-wide team which offers training in Judo, Jiu-jitsu, Kickboxing and Arnis/Escrima. Yudansha Okinawa is an official training center under the U.S. Sports Jiu-jitsu Association, an MMA school under the World Kickboxing Association and boasts 10 amateur fighters, three pro-fighters and students that just train for self defense.

A new program, Girl World-Self Defense is a ladies’ only self defense class that gives women confidence in their abilities to defend themselves. Lastly, Taleh Aliyev, a master in the Sport of Russian Sambo grappling, rounds off the list of programs available for students with the Sambo program.

“We have something for everyone, and anyone can train martial arts, says Moriniere. “Whether you want to lose weight, build confidence in 1 out of 4 of kids who have been bullied or 1 out of 6 women who have been sexually assaulted, take your military martial arts training to a new level, compete in a caged MMA bout or learn music and dance from a different culture, it’s all under one roof here at Capoeira Academy Okinawa” says Moriniere.
