Ex-police chief apprehended on suspicion of hit-and-run

Date Posted: 2003-10-18

Ginowan Police arrested 63-year-old former police chief Norifusa Kishimoto on Saturday on suspicion of breaking the Road Traffic Law and negligence resulting in injury. A police investigation shows Kishimoto drove his car into a motorcycle and then fled the scene. The collision sent the motorcycle across the street, on the oncoming lane, where is crashed into another car. The driver of the motorcycle escaped serious injury.

Kishimoto then drove home and later returned to the scene. As he arrived, police officers noticed that he smelled alcohol, raising suspicion that he drove off in order to cover up that he had been drinking. Kishimoto admitted the hit-and-run, but said that he had taken a couple of drinks at his home only after the accident in order to calm his nerves. If investigators do not buy his explanation, he will face additional charges of drinking and driving.
