R & B, Jazz & Hip Hop Queen comes to OkinawaDate Posted: 2010-04-15  Erykah Badu calls her music “medicine, some kind of antidote for something or some kind of explanation or just to feel good.” She’s showing off that talent Sunday evening at a free concert at the Globe & Anchor Enlisted Lounge inside the new Ocean Breeze Club on Camp Foster. The show is open to everyone 18 years of age and older, island-wide. The show begins at 8 p.m., blending her interpretations of rhythm and blues, hip hop and jazz with unique lyrics that create a rich texture to her music, which she says “speaks to her audience members on many levels.” The show is open only to individuals 18 years of age and older. Erykah Badu began performing at age four, singing with her mother at the Dallas Theatre Center. A decade later she was belting out the tunes free-style at a radio station. As a student at Grambling State University, she studied theater before deciding to concentrate on music full time, with her first album, Baduizm, debuting at #2 on the Billboard music charts and her lead single from the album, On & On, winning a Grammy. She co-wrote You Got Me with Jill Stuart, then collaborated with Common on Love of My Life and appeared in his video for the song The Light. Her peers compare the 39-year-old singer to Billie Holiday for her musical emotional feeling. Aside from singing, she produces records and has appeared in films such as Blues Brothers 2000 and House of D. Her most recent video release is Window Seat. Questions had arisen about whether Badu’s show would take place in Okinawa following negative comments about her removing clothing during a music video in Dallas. The Marine Corps’ spokesman in Okinawa, Second Lieutenant Lucas Burke, responded to a Stars and Stripes query on the matter saying she would have a toned-down show at Camp Foster. |
