Military mum on latest taxi robbery

Date Posted: 2010-04-15

Only days after U.S. military personnel were caught robbing a taxi driver in Chatan, another robbery in Urasoe City near Camp Kinser has another two Americans in police custody.

The latest incident occurred shortly before midnight last Friday outside Camp Kinser Gate 3. As two men were getting out of a taxi, they took the driver’s moneybox and ran away. The taxi driver immediately called police.

Less than an hour later, U.S. military police contacted Okinawa Prefectural Police to advise, “We have detained suspicious persons.” Urasoe City Police have asked the military to let them investigate. Police say the two men had taken the taxi from Naha City’s Matsuyama area to near Camp Kinser.

As one man was paying the taxi fare, the second stole the money box containing about ¥4,000. The men were described as about 20 years of age, or a little bit older. Okinawa Prefectural Police want to talk to the men, but they say the military has not responded yet.
