Date Posted: 2010-04-15

The body of an U.S. Air Force airman has been recovered after he went missing Saturday while snorkeling in waters off Hedo Point on the northern coast of Okinawa.

Search teams recovered the body early Sunday morning, a day after he disappeared while snorkeling. The Japan Coast Guard launched the initial search operations, and Air Force 31st Rescue Squadron, 17th Special Operations Squadron and 320th Special Tactic Squadron members took responsibility for the search late Saturday.

Brigadier General Ken Wilsbach, Commanding General of the 18th Wing at Kadena Air Base, said “we are all saddened by this tragic loss to one of our team members. Our thoughts and prayers are with this young man’s family, friends and fellow airmen.” The airman’s name has been withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

No further details surrounding circumstances of the airman’s death have been released by the Air Force.
