Kadena joins Earth Day 40th Anniversary celebrations

Date Posted: 2010-04-14

Kadena Air Base is readying Earth Week 2010 as part of the worldwide 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, working with the “Perform Daily Acts of Green” theme.

Events on base are being sponsored by Kadena’s Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resource Management. The two agencies have put together a series of events to encourage everyone to recycle, conserve energy and resources, and to adopt a ‘greener’ lifestyle.

Earth Week 2010 kicks off on Saturday with a 5K Fun Run co-sponsored by the Risner Fitness Center. The H.O.P.E. (Heroes Of Planet Earth) activities for this month are two Jungle Clean Days and the Underwater Beach Cleanup. During the Jungle Clean, volunteers will clean up a designated area of base – a great activity for units to do together. Areas along Douglas Boulevard will be the project on Monday, where volunteers will meet at Chapel 1 between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm. On April 20th, volunteers will meet at the Kadena Officers’ Club at the same time to clean up the area between the O Club and Amelia Earhart Intermediate School. The Underwater Beach Cleanup, in conjunction with Project Aware, will be along the Sunabe Seawall starting at 8 am on 24 April.

Other events for Earth Week 2010 are:

• Shredding Party, 21 April, 9 am – 4 pm, Outdoor Recreation
Shred unneeded sensitive documents. Open to base organizations and housing residents.

• Pajama Story Time, 21 April, 6:30 pm, Kadena Base Library
Watch, listen, and engage in fun activities to learn how each person can make the world a little greener. Registration required, call 634-1502.

• Reusable Bag Giveaway, 22 April, Kadena BX & Commissary
Customers will automatically have their purchases placed in a reusable bag. Limit one per customer while supplies last.

• Awards Ceremony & Tree Planting, 22 April, 2 pm, Marek Park
Watch as the winners of the Earth Day contests receive their awards. Then, stay as we continue the circle of trees around the track.

• Amnesty Collection Party, 23 April, 9 am – 4 pm, Outdoor Recreation
Turn in unneeded or excess hazardous materials, whether usable or not. Open to housing residents and base organizations.

• Family Fun Night, 23 April, 6 pm – 8 pm, Schilling Community Center
Have fun by making Earth Day crafts and seeing environmental demonstrations. Registration is required, call 634-1387.

The weeklong celebration culminates with the Outdoor Recreation Expo slated for April 24th from 11 am to 4 pm at Outdoor Recreation. The expo will serve as an open house to the Kadena community to explore all that ODR and the Kadena Marina have to offer. Also on deck are activities and demonstrations on how you can lessen your impact on the environment. There will also be a Swap Meet to help you jump start your green life and make some great trades. For those looking to adopt a pet, Karing Kennels will also be on board for their monthly Pet Adoption event. As a bonus, a $1 lunch special will be available from 11 am – 1 pm or while supplies last.
