Falling concrete wall misses boy by hair’s width

Date Posted: 2003-10-18

A apartment building wall in Itoman collapsed over the weekend, narrowly missing a youngster playing in front of the structure. The 1.5-meter long and 15 cm thick section of a wall of a city-owned apartment fell onto the street below on Sunday.

According to Itoman Police, the boy had been playing with his friends on a field next to the apartment building when the ball landed on the pavement in front of the building. The wall collapsed just as the boy approached his ball. Investigators say that the concrete actually touched the boy’s front hair, but he was completely unhurt. They say that had the boy gone a fraction of a second faster after his ball, he was almost certainly been killed. The boy’s father first tried to call the city office but got no answer because it was late. He then called the police who came to investigate.

According to local residents, the public rental apartment building is about 30 years old and in need of serious repairs. “This is a city-owned apartment building, but the city does not make any repairs unless they absolutely must. We were lucky this time, but no one knows what falls down next,” the boy’s father said.
