Chatan taxi driver robbed at knifepoint

Date Posted: 2010-04-09

Another taxi robbery in central Okinawa has police searching for a pair of black men believed to be Americans.

The Sunday evening robbery in Chatan Town’s Miyagi area began with two black men riding in the taxi, when one suddenly brandished a knife and threatened the driver, telling him “Hey, give me money.” Police investigators say the taxi driver, fearful for his life, gave the men approximately ¥10,000 from his cash box. The men took the money and jumped from the cab.

About three hours after the 9 p.m. robbery, police received a report that a car that had been reported as stolen had crashed with a patrol car at a checkpoint on Route 23 in Chatan and had escaped the scene. Police gave chase to the car at 12:05 a.m. that continued south on Hwy 58 with the fleeing car driving south against the traffic on the northbound lane.

The car finally crashed on the divider and the police arrested the driver who turned out to be a 16-year-old high school student who is a dependent of a U.S. military member. Police say they’re investigating to see if there is a connection between the car theft and the earlier taxi robbery.
