Date Posted: 2010-04-07

An Army staff sergeant charged with hit-and-run in the traffic death of a 66-year-old Okinawa man has been freed on bail by Japanese authorities.

Staff Sergeant Clyde Gunn has been indicted by the Naha Prosecutorís Office in the death of Masakazu Hokama, who died on a Yomitan Village roadway early in the morning of November 7th after being struck by a vehicle. Gunn was tracked down and apprehended after he took the vehicle to a local repair garage to have it fixed.

Gunn has denied hitting anyone, although he admits driving on the road where Hokama died of a broken neck and other injuries. He was charged with negligent driving resulting in death, with the hit-and-run charge added later. Gunn was released from Japanese custody after paying a •5 million ($54,945) bond.
