Two GIs accused in latest taxi robbery

Date Posted: 2010-04-01

Two American servicemen have been taken into custody and will be charged in connection with a March 12th assault on an Okinawa City taxi driver with intent to rob him.

The two, unidentified except as 21- and 22-year-old sergeants, are in U.S. military policy custody. Okinawa City Police say the criminal case will go to the Public Prosecutors Office for indictments. The police investigation shows the two suspects tried to strangle the taxi driver, trying to kill him and take his money.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight in the Moromi area of Okinawa City. Police say the taxi driver was strong enough to fight off the attack, and even try to catch one of the perpetrators. No money was taken. Police say the two Americans have confessed, telling authorities we wanted money.
