Prefecture Assembly plans anti-Futenma mass demonstration

Date Posted: 2010-03-25

It’s still a month away, but the Okinawa Prefecture Assembly has marked the calendar for a date to protest plans for a transfer of Futenma Marine Corps Air Station to another location within the prefecture.

The April 25th mass demonstration will be staged at the Yomitan Village athletic field starting at 3 p.m. “We will gather 100,000 people to the demonstration” says project director Yonukichi Shinzato, a member of the Okinawa Prefecture Assembly. Shinzato says the demonstration is necessary since the central government is indicating it still plans to transfer Futenma’s functions to either Camp Schwab in the Nago City Henoko district, or to an area outside White Beach on the east central coast.

“We will not agree to bring the Futenma Air Station to Camp Schwab, inside or around the White Beach, or into Kadena Air Base,” says Shinzato. We have to show our minds to the Japanese government, and to the Americans, too.” Assembly members plan to ask members of the economic community, workers associations and peace groups, and 27 other groups and organizations, to compete. The group also plans to ask Okinawa Prefecture’s governor, Hirokazu Nakaima, to attend the mass demonstration. Nakaima has not indicated yet whether he’ll support the rally.
