Man held for naming wrong car in fatal accident

Date Posted: 2003-10-18

Deception on the part of a man involved in a fatal traffic accident has resulted in charges being filed. A man who fatally hit a 87-year-old woman two weeks ago with his car while he was backing out from his yard to the street was arrested Sunday after police discovered that the man falsely identified the car used in the accident.

According to a police investigation, the man had been working on one of his two cars, when he decided to move the car into a better position. While backing into the street, the car bumped into the elderly woman, who fell and hit her head on the pavement. She was taken to a hospital, where she died about three hours later.

When police conducted an investigation, however, the man identified his other car as being the vehicle involved in the accident. He apparently did so because the car he actually moved did not have insurance and its mandatory inspection had also expired.

Investigators became suspicious when they could not detect any mark on the car indicating that it had bumped into someone. They then inspected the man’s other car and found clear markings that matched the way the accident had happened. The man was arrested on suspicion of concealing evidence in a fatal accident.
