Court orders school to pay damages in boy’s injury

Date Posted: 2010-03-18

The Naha District Court has found an Uruma City junior high school liable in the 2006 case of a student injured while participating in a physical education class.

The youngster is paralyzed with a cervical spine injury, and has suffered secondary disease that precludes his living a natural live. The court acknowledges the boy cannot walk or use his hands because of the broken cervical vertebrae, and has mediated a settlement of ¥175 million to the family.

The court maintains the boy had never done standing forward rolls prior to the day he was severely injured, and says the teacher should not have allowed him to perform the exercise. The teacher was mistaken, and failed in his duties of maintaining student care, the court ruled.
