Nanjo City hosting Joyathlon sports event

Date Posted: 2010-03-18

It looks like a triathlon, but wait. A triathlon has swimming, bicycling and running. The new Joyathlon being hosted Saturday by Nanjo City is a bit different, as swimming has been modified to ‘swim walking’, a the run has been switched to a walk to make it easier for more people to participate.

The not-quite-new new Joyathlon sport has been established by the Japanese Citizen’s Sports Union, Japan Walking Association, Japan Health Sports Union and the Japan Health Cycling Association. Event times and distances can be set by the local organizers, or even by participants themselves, allowing children and senior citizens to enter the competitions. This marks the sixth time the Joyathlon Tournament has been staged, with the course at Saijou-utaki and downtown Nanjou City.

The Joyathlon includes a 15-kilometer cycling segment, a 7.5-kilometer walk, and a 200-meter swim walk. For beginners, a special course features only the 7.5-kilometer walk and the 200-meter swim walk. A family course has a 3.8-kilometer walk and the swim walking segment to allow families to participate as a single entity.

Ceremonies for Saturday’s Joyathlon begin at 8 a.m., with the Joyathlon starting at 8:30 a.m., the beginners’ course at 8:35 a.m. and the family event at 8:40 a.m. The goal and start line are at Azama Sun Sun Beach. To reach the event, take the Expressway from Okinawa Minami by Kadena Air Base, then travel south to the Haebaru Minami Interchange. From there, it’s about 20 minutes by car. Simply follow the signs to Azama Sun Sun Beach.
