Kunigami official confesses ripping off public money

Date Posted: 2010-03-11

An environment and health section staff member at Kunigami Village Office has confessed to diverting ¥3.2 million in village funds for his own use for everything from paying for a funeral to paying a rabid dog vaccination registration fee.

The unidentified staff member has also submitted his resignation and repaid the money last week. The man admitted taking ¥1.6 million to cover funeral use charges, another ¥730,000 to pay a rabid dog vaccination registration fee, and another ¥870,000 for personal use during the period 2007~2009.

Kunigami Village mayor Hajie Miyagi says he’ll decide what to do about the employee’s action. Village office officials are asking what took the man so long to repay the money. Officials say the paperwork in the village had been very confusing. The issue was brought before the Village Assembly’s March meeting, where assembly members are considering reducing both the village mayor and vice mayor’s pay as punishment for lax oversight of village funds.
