Coalition minority parties oppose GOJ Futenma relocation ideas

Date Posted: 2010-03-10

The cracks are showing in the political coalition forged by the Democratic Party of Japan, and the Futenma relocation plans are at the base of it.

The Social Democratic Party has a Plan A of its own that calls for moving Futenma far away from Okinawa. The SDP idea is to move the controversial base to Guam, Saipan or Tinian in the Northern Mariana Islands. It also has a Plan B that would relocate at least some of the Futenma Marine Corps Air Station functions outside Okinawa to mainland Japan.

Likewise, the Kokumin Shinto, the People’s New Party, has a Plan A and a Plan B of its own. One plan envisions consolidating Futenma operations onto Kadena Air Base, but that proposal is being soundly rejected not only by the U.S. military, but by the mayors of the towns of Kadena, Chatan and Okinawa City that surround Kadena Air Base. The Plan B is to build the new airfield entirely on land, in northern Okinawa. That idea is not sitting well with Nago City’s mayor, Assembly or citizens.
