Miyakojima authorities respond to bomb threat

Date Posted: 2010-03-04

A airport worker opening a mail box at Miyakojima City Airport Monday morning found a note saying “I engineered a bomb in this airport, and it will explode on March 1st at 7 p.m.” The discovery quickly sent airport officials scurrying to evacuate people from the area and search for the bomb.

No bomb was discovered, as police, ambulance personnel and airline officials all searched the airport. Police are now trying to figure who wrote the note and placed it into the mail box. An investigation is under way, and authorities are checking for fingerprints to see if they can identify the culprit. Miyakojima City mayor Toshihiko Shimoji has joined the Airport Operations Director, Sadahide Kawamitsu, in declaring “there were no problems for passengers and we have no limitations on flights.”

The letter was written by someone claiming to be “The Second Honey Bee” and was dated “Heisei 22 February 27th”. It simply said “age and sex is???” Investigators searched the entire airport, but found no evidence of a bomb or simulated bomb.
