Kadena noise suit heads to Japan Supreme Court

Date Posted: 2010-02-25

Lawsuits against noise from Kadena Air Base are moving in several directions, with one now on its way to deliberations at the Japan Supreme Court.

The plaintiffs were rebuffed by the lower court, which wouldn’t listen to complaints about how American aircraft at Kadena were adversely impacting their lives. “Even if the court decision says noise pollution is against the law,” says plaintiff group chairman Seiki Matayoshi, “the American side will never listen. Still the big airplanes are coming and going, and we’re waiting for a decision from the Supreme Court, but we’re ready for a third trial.”

Groups are now preparing for another court battle, staking their work on fighting late night and early morning flights. The suit being readied has 75 plaintiffs joining in. Expectations are that a half dozen cities and villages, including Ginowan City will join the anti-noise fight.
