Miyakojima City doles out subsidies to seniors

Date Posted: 2010-02-25

Senior citizens living alone will soon be getting a bit of extra money these days, thanks to a city decision to provide subsidies to offset taxi fares.

The taxi support money is being given to senior citizens on behalf of their health and happiness, as city officials believe it will make them feel less alone and more a part of the community. The subsidies project kicks in April, although Miyakojima City has been providing subsidies now for seniors going to hospitals, welfare facilities or other limited locations.

The program is to be open to citizens 65 and older, those without transportation and living alone, and who have no relatives supporting them. Miyakojima City estimates 3,000 senior citizens living alone are eligible for the program. Taxi tickets currently are worth 430. The City Office has budgeted 2.4 million for the fiscal year beginning in April.
