Aim High Restaurant and Cigar BarBy: David Knickerbocker Date Posted: 2003-10-18 ![]() ![]() ![]() Aim High also has a huge balcony upstairs that will be completed by the end of November and will become a beer garden. Tokuyu Uza, the owner, says that the new beer garden will probably be the largest on Island. Aim High will serve as a restaurant by day and a cigar bar by night. Hopefully, they will begin selling cigars by the middle or end of October. Tokuyu Uza was born in Okinawa, but he lived in the United States from first to third grade and spent the rest of his time on Okinawa until 1986. After that, he moved back to the states to work towards earning a master’s degree. Eventually, he earned two—one in liberal arts, and the other in communication—at Abilene Christian University in Texas. He lived in America for seven years before moving back to Okinawa in 1993. His motivation for running the restaurant stems from his dream to build a large racing circuit on Okinawa. “Aim High will help raise money for the racing circuit,” says Uza. “I want to build something like the Suzuka Circuit with racing, a hotel, and a park.” Aside from running Aim High and saving money for his circuit, Uza also teaches conversational English part time at a local university. The origins of Aim High is actually a pretty interesting story in itself. “The land under Aim High is actually owned by a friend of mine,” says Uza. “My friend asked me if I wanted to do something with the land so I decided to start this restaurant.” Tokuyu was given a chance to start his own business, and this opportunity brought out the entrepreneur in Uza. The name Aim High comes from Uza’s positive attitude on life. “Always aim high,” says Uza. There are about twenty two menu items in all, and you have the option to either order one of three sets or order dishes separately. You won’t be able to try everything in one visit so I recommend that you visit often and try everything. I especially recommend the Shrimp with Herb Sauce! Tasty! If you decide to order a set course, you have three choices—the full course (¥3500), the fish course (¥1800), or the meat course (¥1800). Each course includes an appetizer, soup of the day, bread or rice, dessert, and coffee or tea. The fish course includes a fish dish, the meat course includes a meat dish, and the full course set includes both a fish dish and a meat dish. During my visit, I ordered the full course meal. Everything was fantastic! There was just enough food that I left feeling pleasantly full. The meal was not lacking anything, nor was there too much! All in all, Aim High was a very positive dining experience. The atmosphere was classy and comfortable, the servings were large, the setting was relaxing, and the staff was courteous and friendly. Aim High is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. They open as a restaurant at 6 p.m., as a cigar bar from 10 p.m., and they close at 1 a.m. Driving to Aim High is very easy. If you are coming from Camp Foster, head towards the Convention Center. Make sure the convention center is on your right-hand side. Pass the convention center and continue straight. Pass tropical beach on your right. At the very first stoplight after tropical beach, turn left, and then immediately after passing the first building on your right, turn right. Aim High will be just ahead of you. Plenty of free parking is available. For more information, call 098-942-8115. |
