Teak wood makes homebuilding easy at Igeto

Date Posted: 2010-02-25

A furniture business launched in 1973 has become one of Okinawa’s leading outlets for specialty furniture and housing materials.

Igeto Furniture carries a variety of western style and sized teak chairs and tables at its Yonabaru Town showroom. They also have special tables made from teak root, and offer housing construction materials made of teak and other quality woods. The showroom features displays of doors, kitchen furniture and cabinets, as well as flooring woods.

The company, which first established an international branch in Thailand more than three decades ago, now operates both in Laos and with a factory in Indonesia that crafts solid teakwood patio, garden furniture and contemporary furniture.

Iketo Furniture, which provides high quality furniture for upscale hotels, uses genuine materials, many of which are not found elsewhere in Okinawa. Iketo’s direct distribution system allows the company to offer top quality products at reasonable prices. Iketo doesn’t simply produce and export goods, but adheres to a company philosophy that “through supplying real value merchandise, we have determined to become a responsible company in harmony with nature.”

Iketo officials proudly emphasize their commitment to replanting trees in southeast Asian forests, replenishing the woods harvested for its use. It considers itself a responsible corporate and community citizen, joining forces with numerous agencies to provide assistance throughout the region. When the tsunami inundated Indonesia several years ago, and the country lacked food supplies, Iketo came to the scene to help by supplying foods.

It hasn’t been an easy road to success for Iketo, having to initially work with local military members in Laos to establish its factory. The Iketo employees lived in tents for days and days to select quality woods, and then hired and trailed local residents with the skills needed to produce high caliber furniture products. Local materials and manpower are exclusively utilized in products then exported here.

Details on Iketo’s operations are at the Japan Update website, www.japanupdae.com, where readers can find and open the banner link on the right hand side. Special price offers are listed. Iketo accepts only cash, and only yen. The showroom is open daily 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Further information can be obtained from Iketo at (098) 880-8760 or email to uketsuke@oki-ig.com.
