Nago mayor sends message: Futenma is not welcome here!

Date Posted: 2010-02-25

Nago City’s new mayor isn’t wasting time meeting with key Japanese government leaders to let them know he is not going to change his position, and that an American airbase in his territory is unwelcome.

“I ran in the election promising I would not let anyone build new bases either on land or on sea,” Susumu Inamine told reporters after meeting with Japan’s Defense Minister, Toshimi Kitazawa, and Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada, as well as Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama. “I have made these promises, and I’ve asked them not to do anything to make citizens feel anxious or to impose a burden on them.

Inamine won the Nago mayoral election in January. The Social Democratic Party agrees with Inamine and is opposed to moving Futenma to Nago’s Henoko District. The People’s New Party, Kokumin Shinto, the other minor coalition party, sees things differently. The PNP is continuing to consider relocating Futenma and its flight operations to northern Okinawa.
