Dentist to challenge Tomon in Okinawa City mayoral race

Date Posted: 2010-02-18

A 62-year-old dentist has stepped up and announced he’ll run against incumbent Mitsuko Tomon in the April 25th Okinawa City mayoral election.

Mitsuru Kyan, the chairman of the Okinawa Prefecture Dental Association, says “I don’t care what party or factional difference or thought exists. I just want to make Okinawa City a place full of future dreams, and create a hopeful life for Okinawa City’s people and make this dream come true together.” He’s taking firm stances against the integration of Futenma Marine Corps Air Station into Kadena Air Base, and is supporting completion of the “Awase tide lands project, not stopping it, to give job chances to everybody.”

He says, though, that the Awase project must comply with environmental protection rules if it is to continue. Tomon is on record opposing the second phase of the project, which she says should be stopped. Kyan says “no, no. We have to promote the Awase project.”

“Okinawa City has too many unemployed people,” says Kyan, “and downtown business is so much down, we have to bring some good ideas into play to fix that.” The current mayor, Mitsuko Tomon, hasn’t offered plans for improving the downtown area, and is confronted with mounting unemployment.
