Drunk driving main cause for license revocation

Date Posted: 2010-02-11

Drunk drivers busted by police account for more than 70% of driver licenses revoked in Okinawa Prefecture.

Okinawa Prefecture Police say drunk drivers account for the bulk of licenses suspended by Okinawa courts. A survey conducted last September through December showed that 131 of 200 local citizens whose driver licenses were suspended or revoked had the action taken because of drunk driving. The other 69 licenses revoked, police say, were for reasons other than drunk driving.

“I got fired from work” was a leading effect of losing a driver’s license, according to the survey, with 29 drivers saying employers showed no sympathy. “Life became very difficult” or “It (losing the license) seriously interfered with my life” was listed by 81.5% of those who lost licenses as being the most common impact. The collapse of the family and divorce also ranked high on the listing of things that happened in the aftermath of drunk driving convictions.

Since the Road Traffic Law rules changed last June and fines were hiked to ¥500,000 ~ ¥1 million, the number of drivers arrested and convicted has continued to climb. Police say the heavy rules are necessary to curb drunk driving, while those who lose license are complaining the fines are too steep.
