Industrial waste dumping catches Itoman copsí eyes

Date Posted: 2010-02-11

Four Okinawa construction companies have run afoul of the Itoman Police, whoíve taken to heart the problems of illegal dumping of industrial wastes.

The illegal dumping came to light in Itoman City last year, with Itoman Police nabbing perpetrators. Those caught admitted their involvement, but then told cops they only did it because construction companies were paying them to do it. One of the Yaese Town construction company culprits, police said as they arrested company officials January 21st, had been illegally dumping waste for more than ten years.

All together, four companies were arrested in the raids. Some companies and their officials are claiming they didnít know about anyone illegally dumping industrial waste, so Okinawa Prefecture Police have advised them itís their responsibility to know the law and adhere to it. The law specifies that there is a three-year prison term and a •3 million fine for violations.
