Indian elephants adapt well to Okinawa zoo life

Date Posted: 2010-02-11

Rahul and Devi are finding life in Okinawa pleasant, and have made friends with countless numbers of Okinawa children. The two Indian elephants, now seven and eight years of age, were gifts to Kodomonokuni, the Okinawa City Children’s Land Zoo, from the Indian government two years ago. They replaced Bebe, an Indian male elephant at the zoo for more than 18 years until dying in 2001.

India’s Ambassador to Japan, H.K. Singh, recognized the elephants’ second anniversary in Okinawa over the week, when ceremonies were held with the animals in traditional Indian attire.
